CHAFFEE COUNTY LANDFILL WIND CLOSURE POLICY

In accordance with Colorado regulations, the Chaffee County Landfill will cease accepting refuse during the following conditions:
         1.  When sustained winds of 40 miles per hour (measured at 5 to 10 minute intervals) are measured for a 30 minute duration.  The Landfill will open when winds are measured at less than 35 miles per hour for 15 minutes.
         2.  When wind gusts equal or exceed 55 miles per hour.  Customers will be detained at the gate until the gust subsides.
         3.  As otherwise deemed necessary by Chaffee County to prevent nuisance conditions as required by regulations.

Chaffee County will use on-site wind monitoring devices to determine the wind strength and duration.  Wind speed readings will be logged in a notebook at 5 to 10 minute intervals to substantiate 1 & 2 above.  Number 3 above also applies if the wind monitoring device goes down.

When the Landfill closes at any time during the last two hours of the day, the Landfill will open the next day at 6:00 a.m. (excluding Saturdays).

The Radio Stations will be contacted immediately with all closings and re-openings.

A County General Administrator will be contacted before a closure is implemented.
