Road & Bridge
GENERAL INFORMATION
The primary responsibility of the Road and Bridge Department is the routine maintenance of county roads which are on our maintenance program. This includes plowing snow, grading dirt roads, maintaining barrow ditches, cattleguards and drainage along our roads, weed and brush control, and patching asphalt. Roads are assigned maintenance priorities based on traffic volume, seasonal use, type of use and other criteria. Due to the predominately rural and mountainous nature of the County, some roads are maintained on a very limited basis, or in the summer only.
We also make necessary improvements and undertake special projects on an ”as needed” basis, based on priority and available time and equipment. The County operates gravel pits from which our gravel, road base and other materials are hauled as necessary.
Every summer, we apply dust control and/or chip seals to certain sections of roads which are determined to need those treatments. (A schedule of 2005 Dust Control and Chip Seal will be available once the schedule is finalized.)
Our Administration Office is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Our mailing address is PO Box 699, Salida, CO 81201. The office is located in the Chaffee County Courthouse in Salida, at 104 Crestone Avenue, Room #125.
If you have problems, suggestions, or questions about maintenance, scheduled improvements, or just need information about a county road, please feel free to call the administration office at 719-539-6961.

PERMITS
Any work done on a County Road or in a County Right of Way requires a permit which must be obtained from the Road and Bridge Department before work commences. This includes (but is not limited to) road cuts by utility companies to provide new service or repair lines, driveways installed by private parties or contractors, accesses to new subdivisions or parcels, and any work done on road shoulders or in ditches. Further information, permit forms and fee schedules can be obtained from the Road and Bridge Administration Office.

ROAD STATISTICS AND BUS ROUTES:
Chaffee County maintains a total of 533.58 miles of roads. Of those miles, 99.97 are paved, 37.83 have a chip seal surface, and 395.78 are gravel.
Following is a list of roads which are currently school bus routes within Chaffee County. These roads are 1st priority for winter maintenance. Please note that only portions of these roads may be maintained. Their inclusion on this list does not mean that the entire length of the road is 1st priority. This list is subject to change.

Currently, bus routes constitute approximately 109.32 miles of county roads.
SNOW REMOVAL POLICY
Our crews are dedicated to maintaining over 500 miles of roads under our jurisdiction. It should be noted, however, that the County is not responsible for state highways, private roads, driveways or streets in incorporated towns or cities.
If a snowfall of 4” or more occurs during the night, crews will be dispatched to begin plowing before normal traffic activity begins. Our first priority is to clear school bus routes and major arterials. Once the main roads are open, we go to collectors and minor roads. Due to the number of road miles in Chaffee County, some minor roads may not be plowed until the 2nd or 3rd day, depending on snowfall.
Extreme blizzard or ”white out” conditions may result in the closing of affected portions of the road system by Chaffee County Officials. Under these conditions, roads that are closed are traveled ”at your own risk”. For their safety, the plow crews are directed to cease operations in those areas until conditions improve. Any road closures will be announced through local broadcast media.
The County assumes no responsibility for damage to landscaping or other objects placed in the right of way, which could be hit by plows.
Residents are responsible for maintaining their own driveways and parking areas. We regret that snow must be pushed off the road into driveways, and crews do make an effort to refrain from blocking driveways and mailboxes, but there is no other option, especially if snowfall is heavy. When clearing your driveway, please remember that it is unlawful to push or throw the snow onto or across the roadway. Snow must be disposed of on your own property.
Please remember that parking along a county road is unlawful. If roads are obstructed by parked cars, they cannot be plowed adequately, and the cars may be towed at the owner's expense.
The Road Department genuinely appreciates calls from the public advising us of weather/road conditions or emergencies. Sometimes, this is the primary method by which we are alerted to existing problems. However, calls making demands on certain areas, or insisting on special treatment do not foster a ”spirit of cooperation”. Your patience during weather emergencies is appreciated. It is simply impossible to clear all roads immediately.
ARCVIEW GIS COUNTY ROAD MAPS
Chaffee County has recently acquired Arcview GIS (geographic information system), which we are using to computerize the County Road Map. Our current map is quite outdated and the new system will greatly facilitate future updates, changes and additions. Currently, we are working on editing and correcting the database. The next step will be to have the maps field checked for accuracy and completeness. Once this process is completed, the new computer-generated maps will be available for puchase in the Road and Bridge Administration Office.
