The safety of landfill customers and employees is very important to Chaffee County Landfill, and conditions are constantly monitored. If the area has increased risk due to high winds or other inclement conditions such as lightning, the facility will close.

In accordance with Colorado regulations, the Chaffee County Landfill will cease accepting refuse during the following conditions:
1. When sustained winds of 40 miles per hour (measured at 5 to 10 minute intervals) are measured for a 30 minute duration.
2. When wind gusts equal or exceed 55 miles per hour that are expected to persist.
3. As otherwise deemed necessary by Chaffee County to prevent nuisance and safety conditions as required by regulations.
Chaffee County will use on-site wind monitoring devices to determine the wind strength and duration in evaluating whether facility closure is required.
Local Radio Stations will be contacted immediately with all closings and re-openings.
County Administration will be contacted before a closure is implemented.
Chaffee County Landfill will not reopen on days of high wind-related closures due the impacts of wind-blown materials, including the cost of labor and materials required to manage debris.
Landfill crew will remain on premises during closures.
