The Landfill is open during regular hours while the COVID-19 is active. Precautions are being taken to ensure the safety of our employees and the public. Because of the volume of customers, there may be a waiting line. Please be patient. We're all in this together. Updated 5/6/2020
For the past several years the County Landfill has hosted a free dump day. As of today, there is none scheduled for this year.
The Chaffee County Landfill is located off of Highway 285 approximately eleven miles north of Salida and 14 miles south of the Town of Buena Vista. Many County residents contract with private haulers to pick up and dispose of household trash.
See Landfill Fees for general operating and fees associated with the operation of the landfill.
The Chaffee County Landfill recycles electronics, also known as "e-waste". Click on the link above for rates and items accepted.
Payment is expected at time of services. Credit cards, Cash or local checks only. Charge accounts may be set up for businesses by filling out an application (Credit Application for County Landfill). In accordance with Colorado regulations, the Chaffee County Landfill will cease accepting refuse during the following conditions:
1. When sustained winds of 40 miles per hour (measured at 5 to 10 minute intervals) are measured for a 30 minute duration. The Landfill will open when winds are measured at less than 35 miles per hour for 15 minutes.
2. When wind gusts equal or exceed 55 miles per hour. Customers will be detained at the gate until the gust subsides.
3. As otherwise deemed necessary by Chaffee County to prevent nuisance conditions as required by regulations.
Chaffee County will use on-site wind monitoring devices to determine the wind strength and duration. Wind speed readings will be logged in a notebook at 5 to 10 minute intervals to substantiate 1 & 2 above. Number 3 above also applies if the wind monitoring device goes down.
Local Radio Stations will be contacted immediately with all closings and re-openings.
County Administration will be contacted before a closure is implemented.
