Chaffee County Breastfeeding Resource Guide

Know Your Rights

Colorado and federal laws and accommodations (512 KB) are in place to protect breastfeeding mothers.

An Employer Must:

  • Provide reasonable unpaid break time, or allow an employee to use paid break and/or meal time, to express breast milk for her nursing child for up to 2 years after the child’s birth.
  • Make reasonable efforts to provide a nursing mother with a private location in close proximity to her work area (other than a toilet stall) in which to express milk.
  • Not discriminate against women for expressing milk in the workplace.

Breastfeeding in Public

According to Colorado Statute, a woman may breastfeed in any place she has a right to be.

Become a Breastfeeding Friendly Employer

Breastfeeding is good for Business

COMPANIES WITH LACTATION SUPPORT HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO RETAIN NURSING MOMS AT A RATE OF 94%. NOW THAT'S EMPLOYEE RETENTION.

Chaffee County Public Health will partner with businesses to provide employees with practical support during the breastfeeding process.

While there is a Colorado Law mandating that businesses provide women with the time, space and support to express milk, work is a big obstacle to breastfeeding.

We want to be a resource to you:

  • Provide national, state and local resources
  • Train on low-cost creative solutions
  • Draft a policy
  • Identify space
  • mini-grants available for construction, furnishings and decorations for creation of lactation rooms
  • Promote and recognize your business-BF Friendly Business
